Full Itinerary

Day 1: Sun 16 June, 2019 - Arrive in Phnom Penh

We will be met at the airport and transferred to the hotel for check-in. Individuals can spend the rest of the day exploring the city on foot or by tuk-tuk or cyclo or laze around the rooftop pool. There is a spa in the hotel for those who wish rub some of the travel fatigue out of their bodies.

Phnom Penh was once considered one of the most beautiful cities in the Orient, and despite its recent turbulent history, still retains its colonial charm. Cambodia’s capital is a bustling city, majestically located at the confluence of the mighty rivers of the Mekong, Bassac and Tonlé Sap.

At 4.30pm we will be collected from the hotel for a sunset dinner cruise on the Mekong River where you can watch how Phnom Penh’s popular riverfront comes to life in the early evening. After the cruise we will be dropped back at the hotel (about 7.30pm). If you wish, you can walk down to the famous Foreign Correspondents’ Club overlooking the Mekong River for a drink. This venue is about a hundred meters from your hotel.

Dinner: Sunset Buffet Cruise.

Overnight in Phnom Penh.

Day 2: Monday 17th June, 2019 - Phnom Penh

After breakfast at your hotel, we will meet our guide in the hotel lobby and take a short walk to the Royal Palace, dating back to 1866 and the last palace built during the French colonial period. The same complex houses the Silver Pagoda, named for the more than 5 000 heavy silver tiles that cover its floors. Its original name is Wat Prakeo, meaning Temple of the Emerald Buddha. In this temple you will view a collection of Buddhas in gold, silver, crystal, and bronze.

We continue to the nearby National Museum, which was built in traditional Khmer style. It houses the world’s foremost collection of ancient Khmer artistic, archaeological and religious artefacts from the 4th to the 13th centuries. More than 5 000 pieces are on display, constituting the repository of the Kingdom’s cultural wealth. We end the morning at Wat Phnom, a contemporary hilltop pagoda that stands at the founding place of the city.

After lunch, we depart for Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, housed in the former school that was taken over by the Khmer Rouge and used as its main detention and torture centre: named “S-21“. After that, you visit the Killing Fields of Choeung Ek – a startling memorial to those that were murdered by Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge.

Day 3 : Tuesday 18th June, 2019 - Phnom Penh

We have the day to browse through the colourful markets of Phnom Penh. Visit the Central Market, an art deco landmark and one of the largest markets in the city, if not in all of Cambodia. Here you will find clothes, shoes, souvenirs, watches, jewellery, food and almost anything else you can think of! The Russian Market is a good example of a traditional Khmer market.

Alternatively find a fun and vibrant pub or restaurant and relax. If craft beer is for you, you can visit Hops Craft Brewery, Himawari Microbrewery or Botanico Wine and Beer Garden, or visit the Samai rum distillery. Bassac Lanes is a delightful collection of small pubs and restaurants where you can sit in one and order from another!

You can easily walk around Siem Reap or hop on one of the multitude of tuk-tuks. Day 5: Thursday 20th June, 2019 – Siem Reap

After an early breakfast, we will spend the day with our English speaking guide and driver on a tour to the temples. This will  include the magnificent Angkor Wat temple.  It is the most famous of the Angkor temples and is featured on Cambodia’s national flag as the temple symbolizes the soul of the Khmer people.

Other temples we will visit will include Ta Prohm – unique in that it has been left largely as it was found: overgrown by jungle trees and vines. It was a setting in the Tomb Raider movie with Angelina Jolie. Bayon (or the “faces” temple) and the exquisite Banteay Srei or “Woman’s Temple”.

Dinner: Own arrangements.

Day 6: Friday 21st June, 2019 – Siem Reap

Today we will meet your guide and driver and you will visit Beng Mealea, the oldest capital of the Khmer empire and one of the most mysterious temples at Angkor where nature has well and truly run riot. It is known as the “Indiana Jones Temple of Doom” temple as it was the inspiration for the set of the movie of the same name!

Thereafter we will go on a fascinating boat trip on the Tonlé Sap Lake, where we have the opportunity to learn about life on the lake. Tonlé Sap is South East Asia’s largest freshwater lake and its size varies enormously depending on the season – rainy or dry!

We will visit the floating village of Kampong Khleang and embark on a boat ride through the village where the fisherman and their families live in stilted houses among the petrified mangrove forests and waterways. Many families live permanently on the lake.

In the evening we will attend a performance of ‘Phare, the Cambodian Circus’. Starting at 8pm, professional artists of Phare Ponleu Selpak (PPS) will perform an inspiring show suitable for people of all ages. The hour-long show mixes traditional and modern theatre: music, dance, acrobatics, juggling and contortion performed in a story about Cambodian lives and society.
